Scarborough Hospital’s brand new surgical ward – the Lilac Ward – was officially opened by Trust Chairman Alan Rose, on his last day as chair of the board.

The ward has 31 beds in 15 single rooms and 4 x four bed bays and includes a surgical assessment unit, which will help streamline and improve the pathway for patients requiring surgery.

Lilac Ward is the first ward in the UK  built using a design solution called the “repeatable room design.” Andrew Bennett, head of capital projects, explained: “The Ward utilises an evidence- based, best practice design solution called the repeatable rooms and standardised components initiative.  The ‘nested’ design of the single rooms with ensuite facilities makes best use of available space and maximises not only the visibility of external landscaping to patients, but also the visibility of patients to nursing staff.”

With this in mind, Scarborough were keen to mirror the design principles with a similarly slick patient entertainment system.  Airwave recommended the Samsung healthcare range of LED TVs, including the “Purecare” wipeclean IC remote control. Each screen was mounted on an HCA 1.8m medical wall arm, maximising the use of space (when in use, but importantly, also when not being used – the HCA arm can fold flat to the wall).  

In the single rooms Airwave installed flat wall-mounted 32” Samsung healthcare TVs.

Alan Rose, chairman of the trust board, said: “Lilac Ward represents the finest piece of real estate across all of our sites.”  Naturally, Airwave were delighted to play their part in achieving this.
