The Trust
Consisting of Sheffield Children’s Hospital (SCH), the Becton Centre, Centenary House and the Ryegate Children’s Centre, Sheffield Children’s NHS foundation Trust is one of only three dedicated children’s trusts in the UK. It provides integrated healthcare for children, including community and mental health care, as well as acute and specialist services.
The Hospital
Located in Broomfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital first opened in 1876. Having evolved in size and scope over the last 100 years, the latest refurbishment project cost £40 million and opened in 2018 – containing the first dedicated children’s clinical research facility (CCRF) in the UK.
Further refurbishment work within the hospital’s cancer ward involved the installation of a new patient entertainment system, and a call to Airwave.
The Technology
Having implemented touch-screen display technology within the hospital a few years ago, Airwave was invited back to refresh the TV system within the single & isolation rooms, and bays in the cancer ward.
On this occasion, SCH opted for a simple and clean installation, consisting of:
19-inch Philips HFL5114W healthcare displays
Powered by Android, and built specifically for the healthcare environment, Philips’ 19-inch display (designed in white) features:
- Chromecast built-in, enabling patients to cast content to the big screen
- Access to the Google Play Store.
- JIS Z2801 compliant antiMicrobrial housing, easy to clean.
- Reinforced glass front and protective bezel
- Easy to use, featuring integrated back-illuminated touch controls
- A galvanically isolated headphone connection and reading light.
- Medical- grade power supply
43-inch Philips HFL6114W healthcare displays
The 19-inch display’s bigger cousin features a gunmetal silver design and UHD picture technology, amongst a raft of other features.
Each 19 & 43-inch display was wall-mounted on flat-to-wall brackets to maintain a small footprint and maximise space, and with safety and security in mind, each Philips healthcare remote control was attached to an anti-ligature security cord, and wall-mounted inside a perspex holder.
It was a real pleasure to return to Sheffield, to update and reinvent the TV system within the refurbished cancer ward.
